== Tactics == *At low levels of Firebug, it is possible to cause self harm with the weapon by setting yourself on fire by shooting specimen, teammates or solid surfaces at close distance. This also can be caused by playing with high latency and walking forwards while firing. That splash damage can be utilized if one aims at enemies lower legs to both pierce with direct damage and deal splash to them in quick bursts to recover the kickback. Self damage from flamethrower will set the wielder on fire along the duration of 7.5 seconds. It's advised you have a Field Medic around to heal you or a Commando clearing fast trash specimen off from Firebug. *Due to the nature of the weapon, it is ill advised to use it against Husks, who has up to 75-87% resistance to its damage and ignition effect, and is generally ineffective against Scrakes and Fleshpounds at higher difficulties. While it's risky, when sufficiently leveled the Firebug perk, it's possible to burn down a Scrake by focusing at its center of mass and legs as it got close after a reload in a high player Hell on Earth match. Same thing doesn't really apply to Fleshpound at the same setup with its 50% innate resistance and durable health however, and will require bigger fire power. *Players using the flamethrower should always be mindful of visibility; the flames can obscure a large portion of the view for all players, making it difficult for all players to see the specimens. As a high level Firebug crouching at the front opening of the team by spraying in small bursts will give rest of the teammates enough visibility also shield them from Husk fire. Sustaining the fire for long not only achieve nothing but also drop the framerates to nearby players and set off explosive projectiles from teammates mid air. This causes Flamethrower to end up being treated as a griefing tool if one ignores team composition and refuses to keep teammates' line of sight clear. *Incurring enough fire damage will cause specimen to panic and flail around, try to spare this crowd control utility on big specimen that enraged close and try not to burn them accidentally at long range. Burnt specimen after taking stacked fire damage will uncontrollably start to flail around have a crisped look and their reactions and movement speed will be 20% slower while has potential to override some enrage mechanics. *Setting the Patriarch on fire helps a great deal with hunting him down when he tries to flee and heal up. Commandos don't need any help to see the Patriarch of course, but everybody else will get four or five extra seconds of visibility. This can make all the difference. Patriarch is the only specimen to be immune to slow down effects of afterburn.
